All Pokémon in the National Pokédex are permitted, except the standard exceptions of Mythical Pokémon and box mascot Legendary Pokémon (see Pokémon Global Link for complete list). Battles are all Double Battles. Players put 6 Pokémon in their Battle Box, but only use 3 for each battle; players have 15 seconds to choose the 3 Pokémon and do not get to see their opponent's Battle Box. There is a 10-minute time limit for each battle (the game will automatically apply tie-breakers if time runs out). Players have 20 seconds to select a move each turn (if time runs out, the system automatically selects a move). Players can play up to 10 games per day, and unplayed games carry over to the following day; 00:00 UTC a new day begins at 00:00 UTC.

Registration begins at 00:00 UTC on July 31, 2014 and goes until 23:59 UTC on August 7, 2014 or until the player cap of 50,000 is reached. The tournament starts at 00:00 UTC on August 8, 2014 and goes until 23:59 UTC on August 10, 2014. The ranking results will be announced on August 15, 2014.

Players will receive 1,000 Poké Miles as long as they participate in at least one battle. If a player is disqualified, such as by having too many disconnects, they will not receive the prize.

Players are split into one of two divisions: Junior Division (born 1999 or later) or Masters Division (born 1998 or earlier). Junior Division players will be limited to playing between the hours of 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. (local time).
