After nearly a year since its Japanese Virtual Console debut, and more than half a year from the European Virtual Console release, the North American version of Super Smash Bros. has been released on the Wii Shop Channel.
The game, originally for the Nintendo 64 system, is the first in what has become a trilogy of games featuring no-holds barred matches between classic Nintendo characters from its many franchises, with the second and third installments, Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, originally being released for the Nintendo GameCube and Wii in 2001 (2002 in Europe) and 2008, respectively.
The original game features two playable characters from the Pokémon series, Pikachu and the unlockable Jigglypuff, as well as Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus Aran, Yoshi, Kirby, and Fox McCloud, with Luigi, Captain Falcon, and Ness as unlockables.
