New information regarding the previously confirmed downloadable content in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U which adds Mewtwo as a playable character was announced in the most recent Nintendo Direct, as well as information on future DLC characters.

A new challenger approaches!

Mewtwo will be available for purchase on both the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U versions of the game on April 28, 2015 in North America and Europe ad April 29, 2015 in Japan and Australia. It can be purchased for one of the two games for US$3.99/£3.59/€3.99/¥417; it can also be purchased in as a bundle for both games for US$4.99/£4.59/€4.99/¥509. Players who participated in the Club Nintendo promotion that required registering both versions of the game by March 31 will receive a free download code for Mewtwo in both versions of the game on April 15. Mewtwo was previously a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

A character reveal video of Mewtwo was also shown in the Nintendo Direct. It can be seen using various moves against other characters; notably, its special moves appear to be the same as in Super Smash Bros. Melee (Shadow Ball, Confusion, Teleport and Disable), although this has not yet been officially confirmed. For its Final Smash, it Mega Evolves into Mega Mewtwo Y, then fires a large purple-colored ball of energy at several other characters, causing explosions around their heads before launching all of them off of the screen; unlike Lucario and Charizard, who also Mega Evolve for their Final Smashes, Mewtwo appears to simply fire a powerful blast and transform back rather than remain as Mega Mewtwo Y for any significant period of time.

Mewtwo's Final Smash

Mewtwo was not the only DLC character showcased in the Nintendo Direct; Lucas, the protagonist of the video game Mother 3, was also announced as DLC for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. He will be available in June this year, with his price yet to be announced. Lucas was a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, making both currently confirmed DLC characters veterans of the series.

Additionally, a poll added on the games' official website, titled the Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot, allows players to nominate a character to be added to the games as DLC. An entry in this poll comprises the voter's gender, the name of the character, the name of the video game it originally starred in, and why the character should be a fighter. Votes are limited to one-per-person. Voting is opened from now until October 3, 2015.

Furthermore, on April 15, 2015, a software update for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U will be released that brings the games up to Version 1.0.6. This update allows players to purchase DLC and tweaks character balancing. It also adds sharing functionality to the Wii U version for photos, Mii Fighters, replays, and custom stages, among other things.

As downloadable content, various Mii Fighter costumes will be released, many based on Nintendo series and other series featured in Super Smash Bros.
