{{bp|Play! Pokémon}}, formerly called Pokémon Organized Play, has announced that, as of July 1, only expansions from {{bp|HeartGold & SoulSilver (TCG)|HeartGold & SoulSilver}}-onward will be legal in sanctioned {{bp|Pokémon Trading Card Game}} tournaments.

The announcement comes after a heavy push for an early rotation by the game's player base. Because new rules associated with the {{bp|Black & White (TCG)|Black & White}} set were implemented before the rotation of pre-HeartGold & SoulSilver sets, players have complained that the format used with the 2011 {{bp|Play! Pokémon#Battle Road Tournaments|Spring Battle Road}} tournaments was imbalanced, boring, and luck-based. Many threatened to not attend Nationals or Worlds if the format was not changed.

The largest impact of the early {{bp|Rotation (TCG)|rotation}} is that the U.S. {{bp|Play! Pokémon#National Championships|National Championships}} will now be played under an HGSS-on format.
