Revealed during Nintendo Direct, Pokémon Bank will be a new feature downloadable only on 3DS-family devices. This software will allow the user to deposit their Pokémon directly onto a special Cloud server. The Pokémon Bank will hold up to 3000 Pokémon and can be accessed at any time as long the user is connected to the internet in some fashion. It is also tied to the 3DS device as opposed to a specific game which hints at allowing a person an easier time of transferring Pokémon from one version to the other. In addition, Pokémon Bank has a variety of search functions, even with 3000 Pokémon, a person won't have to worry about being unable to find the Pokémon they need.

Pokémon Bank is a paid service, with an annual charge for usage however no official price has been announced. They describe the need for a subscription to pay for the maintenance cost and to continue offering the service for future Pokémon titles. There will be a free trial period for a short time after the launch of the Bank to allow users a chance to test out the software before committing.

This Pokémon Bank will also allow users to transfer Pokémon from Pokémon Black or White and Black 2 pr White 2 onto their Pokemon X or Y games using a system called Poké Transporter. This is bundled with the Pokémon Bank and allows for a user to insert a Black or White or a Black 2 or White 2 cartridge and be able to upload their Pokémon from those games onto the Pokémon Bank for easy transfer to Pokémon X and Y. The Poké Transporter cannot return Pokémon to Pokémon Black or White, or to Pokémon Black 2 or White 2 after they have been stored in an online Box.

In a recent effort to continue down playing the use of illegal Pokémon in tournaments, the Pokémon Bank and Transporter will block illegally obtained Pokémon from being uploaded to the Bank or to move those Pokémon from boxes to boxes.
