This event follows the recent European International Championships held in London from December 9 to 11, 2016 and the upcoming Oceania International Championships to be held in Melbourne, Australia from March 10 to 12, 2017. This will be the third International Championships. International Championships will also be held in North America, although no further details are known about that tournament.

The video game competition will use Pokémon Sun and Moon. Pokémon TCG players will compete using the Standard format, including cards from the upcoming Pokémon TCG: Sun & Moon expansion.

International Championships are tournaments new to the 2017 Play! Pokémon season that replace National Championships from previous years. Unlike the Pokémon TCG National Championships of previous years, International Championships are open to players from anywhere in the world. The Pokémon International Championships are some of the largest competitions in the 2017 Pokémon Championship Series schedule, and winners will earn a high number of Championship Points toward a qualification to the 2017 Pokémon World Championships, which will be held in August 2017 in Anaheim, California in the United States.
