The original Generation I core series Pokémon games, Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow (Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow in Japan), will be released on Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console in North America, Japan, and Europe on February 27, 2016. The games will use Nintendo 3DS wireless communication to communicate with each other, unlike most Virtual Console titles.

Japanese download code special edition boxes

The games will be released on the 20th anniversary of their Japanese release.

In Japan, the games will be available at retailers as both download code cards and download code special editions. The download code special editions will include a download code for the game, a special edition box, stickers, a cartridge-shaped magnet, and a map of the Kanto region in the games. Each download code card will retail for ¥1,111 (before tax), and each download code special edition will retail for ¥1,389 (before tax). No details about a release outside of Japan have been announced.

Press release

Pokémon Red Version, Pokémon Blue Version, and Pokémon Yellow Version: On February 27, 2016, Pokémon Red Version, Pokémon Blue Version, and Pokémon Yellow Version will be relaunched on the Virtual Console for systems in the Nintendo 3DS family. The games remain true to the originals—complete with monochromatic pixel art and 4-bit background music. This time there is no need for a Game Boy link cable as fans can battle and trade just like they did in 1998, but now via wireless communication on Nintendo 3DS.
