The rules for Season 4 of the Rating Battles for Pokémon Sun and Moon have been announced. Rating Battle Season 4 runs from May 16 at 00:00 UTC until July 17, 2017, at 23:59 UTC. As in every Rating Battle season, there are four formats available: Single, {{bp|Double Battle|Double}}, Pokémon Championship Series, and Special; the Special format changes every season.

In this season's Special format, Trainers will bring a team of up to six Pokémon, then select only one of these Pokémon to use in the battle after team preview. Pokémon in the {{bp|National Pokédex}} may be used except for {{bp|special Pokémon}} ({{bp|Mythical Pokémon}} and some {{bp|Legendary Pokémon}}) and {{bp|Ash-Greninja}}. Pokémon cannot hold {{bp|Mega Stone}}s, {{bp|Z-Crystal}}s, {{bp|Focus Sash}}es, or {{bp|Eviolite}}. The battles will have a five-minute match time, a 60-second Pokémon preview, and 15-second turn times.
