Japan, the birthplace of the Pokémon games, dominated the 2010 Pokémon World Trading Card Game and Video Game Championships on the Big Island of Hawaii at the Hilton Waikoloa Village Resort Hotel. Japanese contestants won three out of the five divisions contested last weekend.

Videos of the final rounds have been posted on the Pokémon World Championships official Youtube channel.[1]

In the Juniors Division, Last Chance Qualifier player Yuka Furusawa from Japan defeated American Juan Pablos Arenas in the championship match in two straight games. The Seniors Division final saw Canadian National Champion Jacob Lesage defeat an American Last Chance Qualifier player, Mychael Bryan 2-1. Another Japanese player, Yuta Komatsuda defeated American Michael Pramawat to win the Masters Division championship 2-1.

  • 3rd place - Simon Taylor (USA)
  • 4th place - Thomas Harle (FRA)

TCG Senior Division

  • Champion - Jacob Lesage (CAN)

  • 4th place - Hiroki Yano (JPN)

TCG Masters Division

  • Champion - Yuta Komatsuda (JPN)

In the Video Game finals, Shoto Yamamoto defeated Santa Ito in the Junior Division, and American Ray Rizzo won the Senior Division championship over Japan's Yasuki Tochigo.

Video Game Finalists

The top eight video game finalists receive the following prizes:

1st Place

  • A World Championships 1st Place Trophy
  • Airfare and 4-day/3-night hotel accommodations for the winner (including parent or legal guardian for players under 18) and an invitation to participate in the 2011 World Championships
  • A trip for four to Tokyo, Japan, New York City or Oahu, Hawaii, including airfare and 6-day/5-night accommodations

2nd Place

  • A World Championships 2nd Place Trophy
  • Airfare and 4-day/3-night hotel accommodations for the winner (including parent or legal guardian for players under 18) and an invitation to participate in the 2011 World Championships

Additionally, all eight finalists in the Video Game Championship categories will recieve a collection of Pokémon items.

Trading Card Game Finalists

The top 32 finalists in each of the three categories in the TCG competition receive the following prizes:

1st Place

  • A Pokémon TCG World Champion Trophy
  • An invitation and travel award for the winner (and parent or legal guardian for players considered a minor) to the 2011 World Championships
  • A scholarship award worth $7,500
  • One box of each of the most current Pokémon TCG expansions for a year

2nd Place

  • A Pokémon TCG World Championships Second-Place Trophy
  • An invitation and travel award for the runner-up (and parent or legal guardian for players considered a minor) to the 2011 World Championships
  • A scholarship award worth $5,000
  • One box of each of the most current Pokémon TCG expansions for a year

3rd Place

  • A Pokémon TCG World Championships Third-Place Trophy
  • An invitation and travel award for the third place finisher (and parent or legal guardian for players considered a minor) to the 2011 World Championships
  • A scholarship award worth $3,500
  • One box of the next upcoming Pokémon TCG expansion

4th Place

  • An invitation and travel award for the fourth place finisher (and parent or legal guardian for players considered a minor) to the 2011 World Championships
  • A scholarship award worth $3,500
  • One box of the next upcoming Pokémon TCG expansion

5th through 8th Place

  • A scholarship award worth $1,500
  • 36 booster packs from the next upcoming Pokémon TCG expansion

9th through 16th Place

  • A scholarship award worth $1,000
  • 36 booster packs from the next upcoming Pokémon TCG expansion

17th through 32nd Place

  • 36 booster packs from the next upcoming Pokémon TCG expansion

Additionally, the top eight finalists will recieve Pokémon World Championships commemorative items, and all 32 finalists in the TCG divisions will recieve a custom made Pokémon Nintendo DSi XL. In total, more than $100,000 in scholorships will be rewarded to the top 16 finalists in the TCG Junior, Senior and Master categories.
