The article makes it seem as if using an English keyboard and non-trademark romanizations is unusual, which is not the case. As far as I can tell from the screenshots, the kids are taught to type the names in kana the conventional Japanese way.

For example to type Strike's name (ストライク, Scyther's Japanese name) in Japanese, one would have to type "sutoraiku" on a regular Japanese IME in order to get the Japanese kana spelling. Likewise, I would expect the spelling "tabunnne" for タブンネ (Tabunne), and "ke-sili" or "keesili" for ケーシィ (Casey; standard Hepburn romanization: Kēshī).

It may seem random, but it is the conventional way to type them. And yes, on a standard "English" qwerty keyboard layout.
