New items, Abilities and a move in Pokémon Sword and Shield have been announced at the 2019 Pokémon World Championships. New information about Dynamax and online battles was also announced.

Breaking Swipe

Two new items have been announced, Room Service and Eject Pack. The Room Service is a held item that lowers the holder's Speed by one stage when Trick Room is in effect. The Eject Pack is a held item that causes the holder to switch out when its stats are lowered.

The new Ability Neutralizing Gas is one of Galarian Weezing's Abilities. Neutralizing Gas negates the effect of all other Abilities in battle. When Neutralizing Gas is no longer applying, Abilities that activate when a Pokémon is switched in (such as Intimidate) that were suppressed activate immediately.

The new Ability Mirror Armor is Corviknight's Hidden Ability. Mirror Armor causes any stat-lowering effects (both moves and Abilities) that would be applied to the Pokémon with this Ability to be applied to the user instead.

The new move Breaking Swipe is a move that targets all opponents and lowers the Attack of all Pokémon it hits.

Pokémon caught in Max Raid Battles may sometimes have their Hidden Ability. Similarly, eligible Pokémon caught in Max Raid Battles may have the ability to Gigantamax. Extremely rarely, Pokémon caught this way may both have their Hidden Ability and be able to Gigantamax.

Max Guard

Pokémon can Dynamax as long as their Trainer has a Dynamax Band, regardless of their own held item, so can hold any item. Additionally, Dynaxmax Pokémon cannot flinch.

New information about Max Moves has been revealed. Even if a Pokémon protects itself with a move such as Protect, Max Moves can still deal reduced damage to that Pokémon (like Z-Moves in Generation VII). However, the Max Move Max Guard (which all status moves become when turned into a Max Move) uniquely can protect the user from Max Moves as well as other moves.

All Max Moves have an additional effect. The additional effects revealed in promotional material are as follows:

Ranked Battle ranks and their corresponding tiers

In Pokémon Sword and Shield, online link battles are conducted in the Battle Stadium. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use the Battle Stadium. There are two battle formats: Single Battles and Double Battles.

Ranked Battles are one of the modes in the Battle Stadium. In Ranked Battles, players each have a rank from 1 to 10, with the special rank MAX being above rank 10. When playing a Ranked Battle, players will be matched with other players of similar ranks. Ranks are decreased a certain amount at the end of the season before being carried over. Players can receive items by meeting certain conditions in Ranked Battles, such as playing a certain number of battles.

Casual Battles are another mode in the Battle Stadium. In Casual Battles, players compete for fun without worrying about who wins or loses. In Casual Battles, players can use certain Legendary Pokémon and Mythical Pokémon that are not eligible for Ranked Battles.

There are two types of Online Competitions in Pokémon Sword and Shield: Official Competitions and Friendly Competitions. Official Competitions are officially endorsed Online Competitions such as the International Challenge. Friendly Competitions are Online Competitions created by other players, who chose the rules for that competition.

Rental Teams are available in the Battle Stadium. The player can enter a Team ID to be able to use that Battle Team in the Battle Stadium, even in Ranked Battles.
