Today Nintendo announced that the Pokémon franchise, is verging on its 150 millionth game sale worldwide, touting Pokemon XD, released October 3, as its most recent reason for this spectacular figure. Pokémon Red and Green, the very first two games, were released February 27, 1996 in Japan; Pokémon Red and Blue, the first two games in English, were released September 1, 1998 in USA — the Pokémon franchise is only 6 months away from its tenth anniversary.
Nintendo boasts that Pokémon has spawned more than US$15 billion in worldwide retail sales and that without fail, every new Pokémon game sells more than one million. At 150 million sales, Pokémon becomes Nintendo's second best selling franchise, only beaten by Mario himself and also reaffirms itself as one of the greatest gaming franchises in history.
