Even though very few details have been announced, fans are already buzzing about what is likely to be the next game in the franchise. With more than fifty games released in an almost fifteen-year history, the existing collection of games spans a wide range of plots, stories and genres.

Nintendo could potentially make its first 3DS Pokémon game part of the {{bp|main series}}, the most recent titles of which are {{bp|Pokémon Black and White Version|Black Version}} and {{bp|Pokémon Black and White Version|White Version}}. Traditionally, these paired versions are followed by a "third version" - and it is already known that a third version is in the pipeline. Some fans are also expecting remade versions of the third-generation {{game|Ruby and Sapphire|s}}, similar to the previously released {{2v2|FireRed|LeafGreen}} and {{2v2|HeartGold|SoulSilver}}.
However, this game could be part of the popular {{bp|Pokémon Mystery Dungeon}} or {{bp|Pokémon Ranger (series)|Ranger}} series, a reincarnation of older games such as {{bp|Pokémon Snap}}, or even something entirely new to fully showcase the wonders of 3D. With any luck, more details will come soon; the 3DS has its first release, in Japan, on Feb. 26.
