In an interview with Spanish site [http://www.meristation.com/v3/GEN_portada.php Meristation], game developer {{bp|Mana Ibe}} indicated that the fifth generation's story may end with {{game|Black and White|s}}.

During the official presentation of {{game|Black and White|s}} that took place in London on February 10, a Spanish game guide site interviewed Mana Ibe, one of the staff members of Pokémon Black and White, who denied the possibility of an eventual third version called Gray, being widely speculated to follow the two versions that will be released in Europe next March 4, 2011.
During the London press demonstration of Black and White on Feb. 10, the Spanish game guide site obtained an interview with Ibe, who designed some of the Pokémon introduced in the soon-to-be-released games. When queried about the eventuality of a "{{bp|third version}}" sequel to Black and White on {{bp|Nintendo 3DS|3DS}}, Ibe replied:

Historically, every generation has had a third version that would add innovations in comparison to the previous games, such as {{game|Yellow}}, {{game|Crystal}}, {{game|Emerald}} and {{game|Platinum}}. And when Ibe was asked about a hypothetical release of "Gray", she replied with the following (translated):
{{quote|No, not at all. We've finished this installment with Black and White Versions.|Mana Ibe (translated)|cat=no}}<br clear="left">
{{quote|No, not at all. We finished this installment with Black and White Versions.|Mana Ibe}}

If this is proven true, then this will be the first generation not to feature three main titles.
This puts a damper on the fandom's history-fueled speculation about a third title in the fifth generation, the fan-given moniker of which is often "Gray" (derived from the mixing of Black and White). Each previous generation has concluded with a third version that has a slightly different plot (and new gameplay elements) from the original paired versions. {{game|Yellow}}, {{game|Crystal}}, {{game|Emerald}} and {{game|Platinum}} are such games. If "Gray" does not eventuate, then this generation will be the only one without an enhanced follow-up game.

However, there are some lingering doubts over Ibe's statement. Gamers who have investigated the coding used in Black and White have reported that there are hidden data not used in the game. These include two moves&mdash;{{m|Freeze Bolt}} and {{m|Cold Flare}}, both of which can only be learned by {{p|Kyurem}}, an {{type2|Ice}} legendary Pokémon similar to the Black and White mascots {{p|Zekrom}} and {{p|Reshiram}}&mdash;and an obscure key item called a {{bp|God Stone}}. Could these be special mechanics for a third version plotline and mascot? Perhaps. But they could also be beta objects, or involved in an upcoming Wi-Fi event. If Ibe is to be believed, then this might have to be the case.
