Speed Gamers Sun & Moon Charity Marathon
|
TheSpeedGamers, a group of video game enthusiasts who play for marathon hours to raise money for charities, will be beginning their next Pokémon marathon this Friday December 16th at 6pm US Central Standard Time. This year, TheSpeedGamers will be live streaming a play through of Pokemon Sun and Moon to raise money for buildOn to help build a school in Mali, West Africa. You can watch the event around the clock and chat with the participants and other viewers. The marathon is scheduled to last 72 hours but with donation achievements viewers can unlock another 24 hours of marathon time, additional Pokemon games and game play changes.
This will mark TheSpeedGamers 39th marathon since their inception in 2008. Over that time, TheSpeedGamers have raised over $700,000 USD for various causes.
During the marathon, viewers will be able to donate to nickname Pokémon on a first come, first served basis. The list of available Pokémon will be continuously updated on their blog, and their Twitter account @TheSpeedGamers will also tweet when Pokémon are claimed.
Their partners this year, buildOn, seek to break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and low expectations through service and education. For 25 years, buildOn has partnered with local governments and mobilized rural villages in some of the poorest countries on the planet to build more than 1,000 schools in Burkina Faso, Haiti, Malawi, Mali, Nepal, Nicaragua, and Senegal. They also partner with high schools in under-served communities in six U.S. cities, to empower students to remain engaged in school and to positively contribute to their communities through community service and service learning. To date, buildOn students have contributed nearly 1.8 million hours of service to address the most pressing needs in their communities.
