A physical box containing a download code will be released in stores in Europe for the {{bp|Nintendo 3DS}} {{bp|Virtual Console}} release of {{bp|Pokémon Gold and Silver}}. It will be released on September 22, 2017, which is the date the games will be released on Virtual Console normally.

The box does not include a game card, only a download code. This code can be redeemed on the {{wp|Nintendo eShop}}.

For [[Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow coming to Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console|the release]] of {{bp|Pokémon Red and Green Versions|Pokémon Red, Green}}, {{bp|Pokémon Blue Version (Japanese)|Blue}}, and {{bp|Pokémon Yellow Version|Yellow}} on Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console in Japan, download code special editions were available which included a download code for the game, a special edition box, stickers, a cartridge-shaped magnet, and a map of the Kanto region in the games. They were also alternatively available in a [[Pokémon-themed New 3DS bundle, 2DS bundles, cover plates to be released|Nintendo 2DS bundle]]. [[Packaged Pokémon Gold, Silver Virtual Console to be released in Japan|Similar packaged versions]] will be available in Japan for Pokémon Gold and Silver.

In Europe and Australia, {{bp|Pokémon Red and Blue Versions|Pokémon Red, Blue}}, and {{bp|Pokémon Yellow Version|Yellow}} were not released physically on their own, but they were included in [[Pokémon-themed New 3DS bundle, 2DS bundles, cover plates to be released|Nintendo 2DS bundles]].
