The January 2015 Nintendo Direct has revealed that select {{bp|Wii}} titles will be available for purchase on the {{bp|Wii U}} eShop.

One of the features of the Wii U console is that it has a Wii Mode, which gives it backwards compatibility with Wii discs. This new form of software available on the eShop allows the games to be played from the Wii U's Home Menu, without Wii Mode.

Additionally, when playing these downloadable Wii games that were playable using the Wii Classic Controller can be played with the Wii U's Game Pad.

In North America, scheduled titles are ''{{wp|Super Mario Galaxy 2}}'', which became available today; ''{{wp|Punch-Out!! (Wii)|Punch-Out!!}}'', which will be available on Jan. 22; and ''{{wp|Metroid Prime: Trilogy}}'', which will be available Jan. 29. The games will normally cost US$20, but each of these games will cost US$10 during the week they are released.

In Europe, scheduled titles are ''{{wp|Super Mario Galaxy 2}}'', which became available today; ''{{wp|Donkey Kong Country Returns}}'', which will be available on Jan. 22; ''{{wp|Metroid Prime: Trilogy}}'', which will be available Jan. 29. Additionally, ''{{wp|Kirby's Return to Dream Land|Kirby's Adventure Wii}}'', ''{{wp|Punch-Out!! (Wii)|Punch-Out!!}}'', ''{{wp|Pandora's Tower}}'', and ''{{wp|Sin & Punishment: Star Successor|Sin and Punishment: Successor of the Skies}}'' will later be released on the Wii U eShop, but have not been given a release date. The games will normally cost £17.99/€19/99, but the first three games of these games will cost £8.99/€9/99 during the week they are released.

In Australia and New Zealand, scheduled titles are ''{{wp|Super Mario Galaxy 2}}'', which became available today; ''{{wp|Donkey Kong Country Returns}}'', which will be available on Jan. 23; ''{{wp|Metroid Prime: Trilogy}}'', which will be available Jan. 30. Additionally, ''{{wp|Kirby's Return to Dream Land|Kirby's Adventure Wii}}'', ''{{wp|Punch-Out!! (Wii)|Punch-Out!!}}'', ''{{wp|Pandora's Tower}}'', and ''{{wp|Sin & Punishment: Star Successor|Sin and Punishment: Successor of the Skies}}'' (not previously released in Australia and New Zealand) will later be released on the Wii U eShop, but have not been given a release date. The games will normally cost AU$26.00/NZ$34.00, but the first three games of these games will cost AU$13.00/NZ$17.00 during the week they are released.

In Japan, scheduled titles are ''{{wp|Super Mario Galaxy 2}}'', which became available today; ''{{wp|Donkey Kong Country Returns}}'', which will be available on Jan. 21; and ''{{wp|Kirby's Return to Dream Land}}'' (released as ''Kirby's Adventure Wii'' in PAL regions), which will be available Jan. 28. Additionally, ''{{wp|Punch-Out!! (Wii)|Punch-Out!!}}'', ''{{wp|Zangeki no Reginleiv}}'', ''{{wp|Pandora's Tower}}'', and ''{{wp|Sin & Punishment: Star Successor}}'' (released as ''Sin and Punishment: Successor of the Skies'' in Europe) will later be released on the Wii U eShop, but have not been given a release date. The games will normally cost ¥1,350, but the first three games will cost ¥2,700 during the week they are released.
